The Secret Behind Hosome Gingerbread's 97% Fat-Free Treats

The Secret Behind Hosome Gingerbread’s 97% Fat-Free Treats

When you’re feeling a bit peckish, how often do you reach for a ‘guilty’ sweet treat to satisfy your craving? Maybe it’s a muffin, a chocolate bar, or a pastry, all of which will give you a short hit of sugar-fuelled energy before the post-snack guilt sets in. But what if indulging in a sweet treat didn’t have to be a bad thing? At Hosome, we’re proud to create gingerbread that’s 97% fat-free and 100% guilt-free. Here’s how we do it.

How Can Gingerbread Be 97% Fat-Free?

To answer this question, we need to look at what makes Hosome’s gingerbread different. While traditional gingerbread is typically sweetened with molasses for a rich, caramel flavour, we use Australian Honey. Compared to molasses, honey contains no fats. What it does have is protein, which contributes to keeping you feeling fuller for longer and eliminating that post-sweet treat sugar crash when you inevitably feel hungry again.

What’s also important to understand is that not all fats are bad. Healthy, unsaturated fats found in fish, nuts, and avocados are great for a balanced diet. However, the saturated fats often found in sweet treats are the ones to avoid or consume very occasionally. Some commercially made gingerbread can be up to 14% saturated fat! Our secret family recipe cuts these fats out almost entirely, so you can enjoy a delicious gingerbread man without the guilt.

The Role of 100% Australian Honey in Our Recipe

While we keep that family recipe under lock and key, we don’t hide the fact that the secret to our guilt-free gingerbread is Australian Honey. Pure Aussie honey comes in a variety of flavours not found anywhere else in the world, like sugar gum or one-sided bottlebrush, and it gives our gingerbread a subtle sweetness that other honeys can’t quite match.

The other reason we stick to 100% Australian Honey is because Australia’s standards for food production are some of the highest in the world. Strict rules regulate the bee-keeping process and Aussie bee-keepers follow a code of practice to ensure our honey is always safe to consume of the highest quality.

Honey = Healthier?

Beyond the taste and quality of the honey we use, there are a lot of health benefits to consuming honey, especially when compared to gingerbread’s usual sweetener – molasses. Honey is rich with antioxidants, beneficial bacteria, and enzymes which support digestion and gut health. Honey’s anti-inflammatory properties may also help reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and the antioxidants found in honey can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Honey is rich in Vitamin B2, which supports cellular function, Vitamin C, which boosts the immune system, folate, which supports red blood cell formation, and it has a lower GI than molasses, giving you more energy and helping to lower blood sugar levels. Honey is also naturally sweeter than sugar, so we can use a smaller amount to achieve the perfect level of sweetness, rather than using lots of processed syrups or alternative sweeteners.
